Cambodia calls on Southeast Asia to host the World Cup

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called on all ASEAN member states to unite in their efforts to host the World Cup. He said he would raise this topic with leaders of countries in the region as ASEAN chair this year. The expected time to host the World Cup is 2034 or 2038.

Recently, 1998 World Cup champion Christian Karembeu represented FIFA in Cambodia to organize event introduces the World Cup gold trophy. This is the first time since 1974 that this trophy has been introduced in Cambodia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen shared: “In 2022 as Chairman of ASEAN I wants to see ASEAN have a vision and plan to host the World Cup football in 2034 or 2038. I will consider the feasibility and wait for the leaders of the ASEAN countries support this initiative before making it a real possibility.”

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen presented a shirt to Christian Karembeu as a message to FIFA that ASEAN wish to organize the event World Cup to express the voice of the country in Southeast Asia to the world.

“I want to send this message with the second shirt which I received from the FIFA President when signing the agreement between ASEAN and FIFA in Bangkok in 2019. ASEAN wishes to host the World Cup and I will promote this initiative.

I am very Proud to hold the World Cup golden trophy in hand. It is a symbol of billions of people on the planet who love fair rules in football” – Mr. Hun Sen added.

Finally, the Cambodian Prime Minister called for the support of those who fans around the world when Cambodia hosts major events such as SEA Games 32. He added: “Because the 2022 World Cup coincides with the time when Cambodia is rushing to prepare for SEA Games 32 and ASEAN Paragames, I call on lovers Sports around the world support the historic sporting events taking place in Cambodia.”
