Electric cars can travel 2,000km per charge thanks to new battery technology from China

Chinese startup Talent New Energy recently announced a new solid-state battery cell with extremely high energy density in a context where the industry is still trying to find new battery technology.

Talent has successfully developed the world’s first solid-state lithium battery model for car. This battery model has a capacity of 120Ah per cell and an actual energy density of 720 Wh/kg.

This is a new record for both battery capacity per cell and highest lithium battery energy density. . For comparison, the 150kWh semi-solid-state battery pack that will be used on some models of the Chinese brand Nio only reaches 360Wh/kg.

Last month Welion, a Chinese energy company and partner, Nio’s partners said this semi-solid-state battery pack will be put into use in the second quarter of this year. The above pin will enable Nio’s electric vehicle travels 1,000 km on a single charge.

Flexible layer materials developed by The company also helps improve overall battery performance. This is expected to solve concerns about range and safety of traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Founded in 2018 Talent focuses on lithium solid-state battery development and technology material. Talent has developed solid-state electrolytes and solid-state lithium batteries based on oxide systems and has completed process technologies for a variety of materials and solid-state and semi-solid-state batteries.

In press releases last year the company said its first generation semi-solid state batteries had a maximum energy density of 400Wh/kg and the second generation reached energy densities between 400Wh/kg and 500Wh /kg.

These first two generations still used liquid electrolytes. However, third-generation solid-state batteries will no longer contain liquid electrolytes, Talent said in July 2023.
