Farmers struggle when chili peppers ripen red in the garden but there are no buyers

Quang Nam has about 500 hectares of chili cultivation, concentrated in the districts. Dai Loc Duy Xuyen and Dien Ban town. Chili plants are in peak harvest time but product output is almost at a standstill.

Chili is purchased at a price of only 3,500 – 4,000 VND/kg for domestic consumption but the quantity is insignificant. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, exporting chili peppers has faced many difficulties, causing prices to fall, so traders do not care.

In addition, there is a loose connection between production and consumption and regulation. Effective crop direction… has caused the situation of “good harvests losing prices” and stagnant outputs to continuously recur.

In the winter-spring crop of 2020-2021, the entire Dai Loc district has a total of 200 hectares specializing in chili cultivation concentrated in Dai Cuong Dai communes An Dai Nghia Dai Minh.

At this time in previous years, farmers were busy harvesting green and red peppers to sell to traders, but this year very few buyers were stuck with output.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (Khuong My village, Dai Cuong commune, Dai Loc district) said that this year her family is farming 4 Indian chili pole 433 has an investment cost of more than 3 million VND/pole. At the beginning of the season, traders purchased green peppers at a price of 7,000 VND/kg, but after just over a week, the price continuously dropped to only 3,500-4,000 VND/kg. Currently, they temporarily stopped purchasing.

According to Ms. Hien On average, 1 acre of chili produces nearly 1 ton of fruit. Currently, 4 acres of chili in a family can only sell a few hundred kilograms. Traders stopped buying ripe red peppers from the field, making Mrs. Hien very worried.

In this case, Mr. Nguyen Tan Tam’s family (66 years old, Thi Phuong village, Dien Phong commune, Dien Ban town) planted 3 sao of chili varieties of Chi Li and India. Up to now, his chili peppers are in harvest season, but they cannot be sold because the price has dropped so low that there are few buyers. Mr. Tam had to leave the chili on the tree for a few more days to think of a way.

Mr. Tam said he planted this chili crop in November 2020. As in previous years, up to this point, his family will pick green peppers and sell them to export traders at prices ranging from 8,000-15,000 VND/kg. However, the chili market is “standing still” and agents can only buy a few tons because they are only sold in the domestic market.

“Currently, chili is in harvest season but cannot be sold. If we continue to leave the peppers on the tree without picking them, the tree’s tops will dry out and become damaged and we farmers will lose money,” Mr. Tam said.

Duy chili growing area Chau (Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam) has up to hundreds of hectares, mostly concentrated in Le Bac, Thanh Chau, but the link to create a value chain is not effective, farmers seek output on their own according to “verbal contracts” with traders.

According to Mr. Ho Xuan Tam (Head of Le Bac village, Duy Chau commune), the locality has nearly 100 hectares specializing in chili cultivation. “This year’s chili plants are in trouble, with no output for green peppers, making everyone restless. Waiting until they are ripe to sell, if traders stop buying there, the situation of leaving them unripe at the tree is very likely to happen. People People only hope to have a stable output for chili products because this is a highly effective crop, so it is very difficult to find a replacement,” Mr. Tam said.

According to Mr. Tam, there was a previous The company cooperates in production with farmers to cover the output of chili peppers. A few small establishments in Duy Xuyen used to buy fresh pickled chili peppers and send them to Korea for consumption, but are no longer there.

The reason why the fresh chili warehouses cannot be sold, according to traders, is the photo. Affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the Chinese market is not “doing business”. All chili varieties, including red corn and sticky corn in Le Bac Thanh Chau area (Duy Chau commune, Duy Xuyen district), are supplied by people in the area who promise to cover consumption, so the absence of traders makes farmers miserable.
