HCMC: Traditional healers treating bones and joints are rampant

Mr. Lam is examining a patient

For every disease, take a X-ray medicine

 >

Mr. Lam has to three practice facilities at 179 302 and 308 Do Ngoc Thanh Street, Ward 4, District 11. According to the information on the business card that Mr. Lam sent us, he specializes in treating: bone surgery, trauma, fractures, dislocations, rheumatism, sprains, herniated discs.

At 4pm on October 30, we went to the “teacher’s” house at 302 Do Ngoc Thanh Street. This medical examination place does not have any signs except for a few patients waiting. In front of the examination counter, there are three patients with medicine bundles on their feet. Mr. Hai (37 years old) declared his illness to the doctor… remote diagnosis: “My grandmother at home is old and weak so she can’t walk.

The doctor at the hospital diagnosed her with three damaged vertebrae; Among them, one segment is cracked and the other is collapsed. Mr. Lam immediately took a nearby blue plastic bag and pretended to be medicine to show Mr. Hai how to bundle medicine to treat the “sick child’s” vertebrae. Taking three medicinal herbs wrapped in newspaper and giving them to Mr. Hai for 18 million VND, Mr. Lam advised: “One medicinal medicine should be used exactly four days a day, wrapped twice in the morning and afternoon. Each time, leave the medicine to soak for one hour. At the beginning of treatment, the treatment will be three courses for 12 days, then stop taking the medicine for 30 days and continue two courses (eight days) to complete the course.”

It was our turn, Mr. Lam asked, “What’s wrong?” – “My knees hurt” – “Then go take a photo quickly before running out of time!” Taken recently.” When the sound ended, Mr. Lam called out to the back of the house: “Tuan, please take the guests to take a movie.” A boy ran up and led us to the house at 93 Tan Khai Street (District 11), 20 meters from the “teacher’s” clinic, to take a photo for 135,000 VND. Holding up the film, the “teacher” said I had a common aches and pains so I only needed to apply medicine, which cost 35,000 VND/bottle. This bottle of medicine is dark in color and has absolutely no label, drug name, drug ingredients…

At 10:00 a.m. on October 31, we continued to go to the “teacher’s” house. At this time, the doctor at house number 302 was not Mr. Lam but a young man about 20 years old who introduced himself as Mr. Lam’s son. The clinic has nearly 50 patients; Some people stood and some people sat from inside the house to along the sidewalk. This place has patients near the medicine packaging area located right near the toilet. A woman and a young man are pouring medicine onto a tarpaulin to package and deliver to the clinic to sell to patients. This place was also used as a nursing home for more than 10 patients lying around. Some people bandage their arms, others bandage their feet, others apply medicine to their back and neck…

According to our records, many people who go to the doctor’s clinic for the first time are asked to take x-rays before being examined. The film studio doesn’t have a sign on the outside that looks like a normal house, it doesn’t clearly state who owns the facility, and the employees don’t wear name tags. The door to the imaging room must not be made of lead to block X-rays.

The medicine bundle has… calcium for strong bones!

At the clinic at 302 Do Ngoc Thanh, many patients come to be examined for musculoskeletal diseases such as joint dislocations, even herniated discs, fractures… Some people get medicine on the spot or buy it. Medicines come home bundled, but there are only three types of medicines used for all patients, including: black liquid medicine (alcohol applied to the skin), yellow poultices like sawdust (packed in plastic bags) and medicinal medicines wrapped in paper. newspaper. Many patients have different diseases but the indications and medications are the same.

 >

Even though he is young, Mr. Lam’s son, the “medicine doctor”, is among the “superstars” in his ability to “speak gossip”. “Teacher” boasted: “If an 85-year-old has back pain, I can do it 3 times and it will be cured. Some people have had back pain for 20 years and I guarantee the pain will be gone. I have someone in a wheelchair who can help me walk again. Some people’s bones broke into three pieces and I re-tied them and it was normal. To do so, you must study Eastern and Western medicine in combination.”

While listening to the patient’s conversation, the “teacher” turned to ask the patient a very funny question: “Are you flat?” then answer the phone again. It was the turn of patient Ng.V.S. After watching the film of the heel and ankle, the doctor said: “If I had put medicine on your leg when it first got worse, I would have been able to play soccer in the future, but now it’s like this… But it’s okay, I have a way to put medicine on it with calcium for you.” If you have strong bones and strong bones, you can walk.”

 >

Patient Lam Le D. (near An Dong Market, District 5) just brought the film in and was immediately told by the doctor: “There are so many deformities… You have neck and back pain, stiff joints, weak arms and can’t hold objects.” Your finger can’t straighten out and you have to bend it… Your illness is serious. If you go to the hospital, they will ask for surgery.”

 >

But then the “teacher” contradicted his own diagnosis: “But the disease has not developed yet. She had a pinched nerve. She’s just now sick of her hand. Usually after surgery due to an accident, the (joint) is sticky. Hearing that, Ms. D. reacted: “I had an accident, but I didn’t have surgery?”. The teacher immediately put out the fire: “You have a headache, shoulder pain, numbness in your hands and can’t hold things. That’s right.” Her hand was swollen. Now, will you take the medicine home or leave it here?” =”MARGIN:0 0 0″>

Many patients came to Mr. Lam because of rumors He treated it well, but after using all the medicine, the disease still did not go away. Ms. Hua T.Ph. (84 years old, residing on Pho Co Dieu Street, District 11) said that the doctor previously diagnosed her with a broken femur, but because she heard rumors that “teacher” Lam took medicine and did not need surgery to still heal, she came to see him. When I went to the doctor, he asked me to take a photo and then prescribed three sets of medicine that cost 15 million VND. After that, she had another two ladders and was still unable to walk. After finishing the bundle of medicine, her family took her for an x-ray, but the doctor still confirmed: “Fracture of the right femoral neck.” In the end, her family had to take her back to the hospital for treatment.

 >

At Mr. Lam’s clinic, while waiting for the “medical examination”, we sometimes see patients rushing in to ask the doctor why the medicine has been taken completely (nine days or even 12 days). It cost more than a million VND but the disease did not go away. A patient came to reflect: “Why have I applied your medicine for over a month and a half, but my leg still hurts and is swollen?” A female patient complained: “It’s been almost two months since the doctor’s medicine package cost 18 million, but it’s still so painful.” A patient who took medicine six months ago got better, but now has pain again after bending up and down. “Teacher” explained that this disease comes back a lot…

Only effective for simple diseases

 >

Doctor Tran Van Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine, explains: some medicinal herbs, when tied outside the patient’s body, can treat musculoskeletal diseases. However, the effect only occurs on simple, mild diseases such as: degenerative spondylosis, mild spinal disc herniation, sprains, dislocations (but after good correction), closed fractures (with axial conditions). Straight bones are not displaced and follow-up X-rays are required). For some other injuries, the medicine bundle does not bring results.

 >

TS. Doctor Nguyen Dinh Phu, Deputy Director of People’s Hospital 115, Ho Chi Minh City, analyzed according to Western medicine, there are generally two methods for treating traumatic fractures: conservative treatment with cast adjustment and surgery. Patients only need reduction and recasting for simple closed fractures with little displacement and mild soft tissue closed injuries. However, if the blunt trauma is accompanied by crushing of many soft tissues and neurovascular complications, compression of the fat embolism cavity; If you have a complex fracture, the bone is displaced a lot: the fracture has neurovascular complications… then surgery is required to resolve it.

According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Phu, in the case of femoral neck fracture in the elderly, if the elderly patient has many quality medical diseases Poor bones that cannot tolerate surgery are often treated conservatively with an immobilized anti-rotation splint on the ankle, not a cast.

 >

Doctors at Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedics Hospital believe that it is not possible to use casts for all cases of musculoskeletal diseases. Many bone and joint diseases cannot be detected if a simple x-ray is used. For example, rheumatoid arthritis must be tested for rheumatoid factor, autoimmune diseases causing joint pain, osteoarthritis due to uric acid deposition… blood tests are required, but x-rays cannot be evaluated. Autoimmune diseases that cause joint pain require lifelong medication and cannot be stopped. Or diseases that damage tendons and ligaments must be diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but X-rays cannot detect them.

Doctors also recommend that disc herniation is a common disease today and cannot be treated with medication at all, but must take medication or be forced to Surgery if the disc protrudes and presses into the spinal cavity. Particularly, bone spur disease (also known as spondylosis) is actually a normal phenomenon in old age.

This condition does not require treatment unless it is acute. Patients must be careful in all situations because there are actually cases of back pain caused by other diseases such as: sitting in the wrong position carrying heavy objects, stretching the nerve ligament system causing pain or due to disc herniation. Or as you get older, the cartilage layer gradually reduces, the ligaments lose their elasticity, and calcium is deposited, so there can be pain due to the synovial joint capsule…

 >Forced shutdown 3 clinics and X-ray facility

From sources of Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Newspaper on the morning of December 12 /11 Inspectors of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health inspected three operating facilities of Mr. Tran Suong Lam (also known as Quoc Lam Tran Cooc Lam) at the addresses 302 308 179 Do Ngoc Thanh, Ward 4, District 11 and an X-ray room (93 Tan Khai District 11). At the time of inspection, the team discovered that all four facilities were operating without a license.

At clinic 302 Do Ngoc Thanh Thanh Investigation discovered that there were dozens of patients coming for treatment. However, the two people who examined the patient and applied medicine to the patient, Tran Suong Lam and Tran Gia Nguyen, have not yet been able to present their operating licenses and practice certificates. Even “physician” Tran Gia Nguyen (Mr. Tran Suong Lam’s son does not have a professional degree…). Also here, the group discovered many bags of medicinal herbs, dozens of bottles of rubs, packs of poultices of unknown origin, no labels on how to use, and no prescriptions registered with the Department of Health. The medicine packaging and preparation area is near the toilet. Although the facility is operating at 308 Do Ngoc Thanh, there is no physician. At the time of inspection, five patients were applying medicine. The person who performed the medicine wrapping technique for the patient was Trinh Cam. Similarly, at clinic number 179, there are four patients taking medicine. The person giving the medicine was Vo Diep Huong. The inspection team discovered many unprepared medicinal herbs.

 < /span>

At 9:30 a.m. on November 12 when it was discovered that an inspector came to check Three staff offices at the X-ray department (93 Tan Khai) of Mr. Tran Suong Lam were closed and ceased operations to bypass the inspection team. However, the Department Inspectorate and local authorities later asked Mr. Tran Suong Lam to open the X-ray room. There were two employees (an X-ray technician and a cashier) in the room at this time. Through inspection, six patient records were discovered: an X-ray machine, an X-ray film developer and many X-ray films. This facility also does not have an operating license and does not have a radiation environment safety certificate… The facility has an imaging technician but no one to read X-ray results. The film readers are Mr. Tran Suong Lam and Tran Gia. Raw (both untrained).

Inspector of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health requested Mr. Tran Suong Lam immediately must stop operating the above three clinics and X-ray facility. Clinics that are not allowed to receive patients display signs saying they are closed to let people know. The inspection team also handed over the management and compliance monitoring to local authorities. Inspectors of the Department of Health have sealed the drug packages for inspection and handling.
