In the final match of the WTA Finals 2023 on the morning of November 6 in Mexico, Iga Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-0 and she firmly consolidated the number one position of the WTA.
Pegula defeated Swiatek in Montreal last August and played impressively to reach the final of the 2023 WTA Finals. However, the American player could not surprise Iga Swiatek at a high level.
“Swiatek played too solidly. The pressure that Swiatek created was so great that I overplayed my hand. I don’t know the exact reason, but my ball feeling wasn’t good today,” Pegula shared after the WTA Finals final with Swiatek, a match in which she only won 1 game.
Iga Swiatek said after winning the 2023 WTA Finals: “I’m quite pressured this season because I was so successful last year. But I know I’m in for another great season. I accept that the feat of 37 consecutive wins in 2022 cannot be repeated.”
With the 17th championship of his career Iga Swiatek ends the 2023 season as number one world for the second consecutive year. The Polish female tennis player lost this position to Sabalenka after the US Open in September.
