Interesting way of using the dot “(!?)” of Vietnamese newspapers

I take as an example a recent article about two men being arrested by the police of Cao Xuyen town, Thanh Hoa and demanding 75 million for the “crime” of eating porridge and forgetting to bring documents, including an interview with Mr. Duong Van Thai, Chief of Police. An town:

 

“The incident of Mr. Le Quang Long – Deputy Town Police and Mr. Duong Cong Thinh Taking money from Mr. Khanh and Mr. Ngoc, a total of 75 million VND, without any documents at the town police headquarters is true.”… Mr. Thai added, “What these policemen did was wrong.” . Those guys don’t understand much, so please forgive me (!?)”.

Or for example This example is taken from an article about Vedan company receiving an award for public health:

 

Central Director Ho Chi Minh City Quality and Brand Development Consulting Center (NATUSI) Nguyen Thi Sinh also explained that maybe due to confusion, the MC mistakenly announced Vedan’s name on the list of businesses named to receive the award (!? ).

 

I really support these “(!?)” things. Even though it’s not very nice (a bit “Lao T-shirt and slippers), I feel happy every time I see it appear.” In my head, the reporter’s voice said, “Are you crazy?” Are you crazy? Oh my god, who taught you to talk so well?

 

That’s strong speaking. To put it mildly, every time I meet a “(!?)” I at least feel like the reporter is thinking: “This is unbelievable. It’s hard to accept.” That’s the only way a reporter can subjectively comment on a ridiculous statement without clearly writing in the article: “What a ridiculous statement”. Very subjective but still not more than the newspaper allows – because it’s just a few punctuation marks. (Even typing “(!?)” into Google will not result in  because the Google system does not accept “(!?)” as a word. )

 

 

Sometimes reporters will add (!?) to the end of the article title:</ span>

“Miss “Aozai”? Crazy? Ham?” The reporter’s perspective on the article’s content is very clear; After reading the title, I immediately knew the article was subjective. I imagine the reporter standing there looking at the prize box with the word “aozai” printed on it and then fainting on the spot. The ambulance came and the guys in white shirts gave oxygen and asked if anyone knew where this girl was from.

A “(?!)” placed in a strategic position can completely change color of the article.  >

Joe added: “I want to become a legend. literary dialogue.”

Completely different from:

Joe added: “I want to become a literary legend (!?)”

 

Sentence First, readers will understand that it is Joe’s desire. Whether he succeeds or not depends on Joe’s ability and effort. The second sentence readers will understand very differently: it is Joe’s wish; Unfortunately that wish will never come true. This guy’s writing is so bad, who does he think he is?

 

In that case“(!? )” is synonymous with “thoughtful”.

 

There are some great Vietnamese newspapers Avoid using “(!?)” to keep reputable style. Because of its subjective nature, newspapers and reporters must be careful when deciding whether to use it. The statement or situation described must be truly ridiculous and the character involved must be undeniably wrong. In many Western countries, incorrect use of “(!?)” is a case where you can sue and have a high chance of winning. (Just a theory because English is mainly not used.) Who knows, soon there will be a lawsuit in Vietnam related to celebrities being “(!?)”.
