The Covid-19 epidemic is a catalyst that makes people focus more on the value of spiritual life, so the demand for pets increases. Recently, many people want to own and raise cats at home, despite limited urban living conditions.
From actual needs, operations business cats have begun to flourish, especially in countries with temperate climates such as Russia, England, France, China… At the same time, domestic cat breeds are also more diverse, with priority given to cat breeds. The most popular is still the British Shorthair Scottish Bengal Maine Coon… with an export value of several tens of millions to billions of dong per cat.
Mr. Nguyen The Vinh – Vice President of Vietnam Cat Association, one of the pioneers cat export movement said that Vietnam began forming this type of business 6-7 years ago. Currently, Vietnam’s cat export potential is expanding very positively. 2 big cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have great advantages with many breeding farms meeting international standards.
The “Emperor” pans for gold
Cats Often associated with the title “emperor” because of his luxurious appearance and cool charisma, he can eat and dress happily and go to the spa… currently he is a “character” with the same ability as the name to bring gold coins to his owner. p>
According to Mr. Vinh, Vietnam has been able to export a lot to countries such as China, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, USA, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, Dubai. Cats with normal color codes are worth $3,000-4,000/cat (about 70-95 million VND). Particularly for individuals with rare genes and rare colors, the price ranges from $7,000-15,000 (about 160-360 million VND) and is always out of stock because the product is sought after.
Leave it to the dogs. Rare cats possessing this dominant genetic source have a higher value than breeders who often have to send genetic testing samples abroad to assess and determine the most accurate value of the cat.
“In the export quota Maine coon cats are the most widely kept domestic cat breed in the world. Adaptability to environment is good, so Maine coons bred in Vietnam, if well cared for according to standards, will grow as beautifully as those in cold countries” – Ms. Vu Thuy Dung, a famous breeder with the purebred Maine Coon and Ragdoll lines shared.
Currently, a Maine coon ns11 cat (an American long-haired cat breed that stands out with a large appearance and a mane like a lion – PV< /em>) with green eyes currently has a very high value from 200 to 600 million VND. The price is up to hundreds of millions of VND, creating an open profit path for the cat export business. p>
Exporting cat business in Vietnam is still a new industry, but through international “cat beauty” contests held in Vietnam, it is creating a foundation for this industry to develop strongly.
Conditions for foreign cats
No less than what people need Exporting cats also needs to meet strict, even harsh, conditions.
Export cat breeders say that initially, they must choose breeds with good genetic resources and apply appropriate care for breeding cats. At the same time, cats need to live in an environment with temperature and humidity suitable for each stage of development, with air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter.
The diet must also ensure quality. Supplement necessary micronutrients for cats to fully develop, have good weight, have thick, beautiful fur, and be free of fungus.
The health of each standard cat is always carefully monitored and cared for – nape drops to prevent parasitic ticks and lice, deworming, and regular vaccinations on time…
It is especially important that cats are vaccinated against rabies. Many countries such as China, Europe… always require cats to be vaccinated with 2 anti-rabies shots and have a standard rabies serology test certificate before being imported.
In addition, each cat To be exported, it is necessary to register with the World Cat Federation to create a pedigree for cats with identification chips. Even during the process of exiting the country, many cats have to transit through 1-2 intermediate countries before reaching their destination and have to hire someone to fly with them to ensure there are no transportation problems.
Although Although cat breeding for export has a huge income, the risks are also very large because the product is a living organism. Mr. Nguyen The Vinh said that the first difficulty is that when importing breed cats, whether imported from abroad or domestically, they are all foreign cat breeds that are not suitable for the climate and soil conditions in Vietnam.
In addition to high transportation costs, importing/exporting cats also faces many problems with exit documents, veterinary quarantine, general examination… There are countries with very strict entry procedures such as Japan, Singapore Indonesia UK Europe…
“It is necessary to have a very thorough general examination and then check the anti-rabies serum in the body, which takes 6-8 months. After that, the cat will be kept in quarantine for several months at sea. Only after a full inspection can you enter the country. If any problem occurs, the cat owner will have to bear a huge amount of damage,” Mr. Vinh explained.
“Huge” investment to pursue this profession
Ms. Vu Thuy Dung said the cost of taking care of a cat breeding farm for export is not small. about 80-100 million VND/month including electricity bill for quails, raw food, spa functional foods and medical examination and treatment costs.
“Because I raise them on a large farm scale with 5 separate rooms There are full machines and air conditioning equipment, so some months the electricity bill alone is up to 25 million VND. Maine coon is a large cat breed so its diet is also very different. In addition, for pets to have beautiful fur, they need to be spa at least twice a month, the cost is usually 250,000-350,000 VND/time depending on weight” – Ms. Dung said.
Vietnamese Nam currently does not have any professional cat breeding training schools, so there are still many shortcomings for those who are interested and want to try their hand at raising cats for export. Farm owners must educate themselves through media from international cat associations such as WCF CFA Tica FIFE… or at domestic and foreign cat shows.
