Raising giant fish on a “terrarium” Tay Do farmer lives a leisurely life and earns quite a profit

More than 10 years ago, Mr. Nguyen Van Bien (73 years old, living in An Thoi ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho) and his son experimented with raising giant catfish in earthen ponds. However, this farming method was only good in the first few crops, after that many fish died, causing Mr. Bien to lose money.

Find out the reason, the old farmer discovered that it was environment unclean water Fish are most susceptible to disease during the rainy season, when alum flows from the ground into the pond, causing the fish to suffocate and shock.

Not giving up because of the difficulties that arose, Mr. Bien and his son learned about a more optimal method of raising fish. About 4 years ago, he learned about the technique of raising fish in tarpaulin tanks, so he decided to fill in some earthen ponds and build tarpaulin-lined cement tanks to raise giant catfish. This method is quite suitable for urban areas with little land.

“Raising giant fish in a tank like this is easy to manage water sources and diseases on the fish. When you see the tank is dirty, clean it and change the water It’s very convenient, thanks to that the fish grow quickly and get sick less,” old farmer U80 analyzed.

The appropriate stocking density is 600-700 fish/40m2. Fish from stocking to harvest from 15 to 16 months, the weight ranges from 900g to 1kg/fish, which is standard. With 15 tanks each year, the farmer can harvest 3-5 tons of commercial giant catfish at a price of 60,000 VND/kg, minus all costs and profit of 60-70 million VND.

Sharing the secret to raising giant giant fish for high profits, Mr. Bien said that this is an easy-to-raise omnivorous fish that can be fed with green vegetables combined with industrial pellets to shorten the time. harvest. Usually, he uses banana vegetables grown in his garden or drift vegetables (discarded vegetables) bought at the market to feed the fish… Thanks to that, the cost of feeding the fish every day can be saved quite a bit.
