Scared at the sight of millions of insects covered in pitch black on the beach

European beetles appear An unusual and mysterious phenomenon covered the beaches in Cayton Bay near Scarborough, England on April 13.

A local resident named Sue Weatherill accidentally discovered it while walking around the beach in the early morning. It is estimated that the number of bugs can reach millions.

According to Sue, while walking along the beach, she accidentally discovered something strange lying black on the beach like a “seed shell”. When she got closer, the woman was startled to see that they were beetles. “This has never happened here before. I was even more stunned when I realized they were living creatures,” said Ms. Sue.

Some people speculate that these insects may be Lochmaea suturalis, a native beetle that lives in northwestern Europe . However, according to staff from the Scarborough and Burniston Coastal Rescue Team (SBCR), this is a European chafer beetle.

“On the afternoon of April 13, while the team was patrolling the beach, a member reported something unusual happening. Large numbers of European chafer beetles have washed ashore around the shoal. We have now reported it to the coastal pollution treatment team for investigation and clarification,” said a representative of the SBCR rescue team.

European chafer beetles of the Scarabaeidae family are often found light reddish brown with an average length of 13 – 14 mm. Previously they only appeared in Europe but have now spread to areas in North America where they often eat leaves.
