Student drowned in international school swimming pool: Mother haunted, school manager shaken

Just over ten days ago, Ms. Bich Ngoc, living in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, received news that her distant friend’s child drowned in a swimming pool. Many days later, she still hasn’t calmed down, but now she reads the news again, a 9th grade student in Hanoi death at international school swimming pool.

“Information “This news has been haunting my mind since yesterday afternoon. I’ve been tossing and turning all night and can’t sleep,” Ms. Ngoc said.

Ms. Ngoc said that many years ago, she refused to let her child learn to swim in any form from now on. her own experience.

The mother said that at that time she often took her child to the swimming pool next to her house. Here, she witnessed children learning to swim through their parents’ registration or students being brought to learn by schools.

She describes a swimming instructor who can tutor 4-5 children or more at the same time. Children who have just learned to wear a life jacket can remove the life jacket once they know how to swim. The most worrying problem is that the swimming pool is often very crowded. The instructor cannot easily observe the children he is tutoring at all times.

“I have witnessed a swimming teacher panicking looking for a 5-year-old student because “I didn’t see him anywhere. After a while, they discovered the boy playing with his friends at the children’s pool slide,” she said.

Students who come to learn swimming in classes at the school often take classes during off-peak hours when the lake is quieter. Each class has dozens of students. There are many classes held at the same time. The children are divided into groups to study.

According to Ms. Ngoc’s observations, children playing in the lake are not studying effectively. Not to mention the problem of supervising all the children.

Seeing clearly these instabilities, many years ago, when her school organized swimming lessons for students, Ms. Ngoc refused to let her child participate.

After that, only when she found a 1-on-1 teacher and studied at an empty swimming pool did she register her child to study and always be supervised by her parents. She and her husband also agreed on the principle that when taking their children to the swimming pool, parents absolutely do not hold the phone and do not take their eyes off the child.

In addition, she often chooses swimming costumes for her children such as swimming clothes, goggles, and hats with strikingly different colors and designs so that she can easily observe her children while swimming.

Many times I told friends and relatives that their children’s swimming must be supervised by their parents.

The mother confided that her 6th grade daughter is a very good swimmer and once won first prize in a small-scale swimming competition. There were a few times when she subjectively let her child swim alone, but after each tragic drowning incident, the mother reminded herself to be more careful.

Children drown while learning to swim

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the past decade drowning has claimed the lives of more than 25 million people. In Vietnam, drowning is one of the 10 leading causes of death for children from 5 to 14 years old. In light of this situation, over the years, popularizing swimming has received attention. Many school organizations organize swimming lessons for children. Learning to swim is intended to prevent children from drowning, but sadly, there have been many cases where children lost their lives while learning to swim.

At swimming pools in Hanoi, Thai Binh, Long An… there have been cases where A child tragically drowned when his parents took him to swimming lessons.

Before the incident of students dying at the international school swimming pool in Hanoi, there were also cases of students losing their lives while learning to swim at the school.

Some time ago in Ho Chi Minh City, there was an incident where a 6th grade student at Tran Quang Khai Secondary School in Tan Phu District drowned during the first swimming lesson according to the school’s program.

At the swimming lesson that day, there were only two supervising teachers along with the contract unit managing more than 100 students participating in the lesson.

Another case was a 6-year-old student at the school. Hoang Dieu Thu Duc elementary school drowned while practicing swimming in the school’s swimming pool when the teacher sent the students to a security guard to look after while waiting for the swimming teacher to arrive.

A rare case is also in Thu Duc An elementary school student drowned during a swimming competition at school. This child registered for the exam even though he did not know how to swim. The teacher believes the child did not check again.

When it comes to organizing swimming lessons for students, many school administrators… tremble. There are too many inadequacies in organizing swimming lessons for children in schools today, such as many schools without swimming pools, students have to move to places with rented pools; Organizing swimming lessons for many students makes it difficult to be effective; The school’s teachers do not have professional expertise in this field…

The manager of a school in Ho Chi Minh City said that it is called a swimming teaching organization, but because it is crowded, in fact the children mainly go to the pool to play. Learning to swim is not effective, so there is a situation where students have learned to swim for many years but do not know how to swim.

This person share When organizing swimming lessons for students from localities to schools, you must plan and report in very specific detail. The issue of safety for children is given attention.

However, according to him, safety for students when teaching swimming does not lie on paper but must be in the pool as soon as they set foot in the water…
