Taiwan’s most famous tourist destination Turtle Island lost its head after the earthquake

According to The Guardian, the giant cliff at the head of Turtle Island (Guishan or Turtle island) collapsed into the sea after the strongest earthquake in the past 25 years” in Taiwan.

Turtle Island is in northeastern Taiwan’s Yilan County, about 10km from Toucheng town. Looking back from afar, the island is shaped like a turtle swimming through the ocean, so it is called Turtle Island.

This island is actually an inactive volcano that last erupted in in 1785. Previously, the people living on the island were mainly fishermen but were evacuated in 1977 due to a difficult life.

Since 1977, Turtle Island became a military base that is currently manage as a location travel and nature reserve. In 2000, the island officially opened to tourists as a marine ecological park.

Today the island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan as a stopover. Convenient for dolphin watching expeditions. The island is only open to visitors from March to November. 

A daily limit of 1,800 people will be allowed to visit as long as there is a professional tour guide. Those who want to visit the island must register for a tour at least three days in advance.

According to Taiwain News some points Notable sights on the island include: freshwater lake (Guiwei lake), Guishandao military tunnel, Gonglan temple and sulfur spring. Visitors must bring food and drink to the island and clean up all trash.

Despite efforts to keep the island clean, trash still washes up on Guishan Island’s beaches .

To solve this problem each year the spring opening of Guishan Island to tourists begins with a beach clean-up sponsored by the Yilan county government.

For those looking to visit Guishan Island later this year one-day tours start at NT$2,980 per person. Tours offer the option of departing from Toucheng train station or Wushih port.

The earthquake occurred at 7:58 a.m. (6:58 a.m. Hanoi time) with the epicenter located in the eastern part of the island of Taiwan at a depth of 15.5 km. Taiwanese authorities said the 7.2-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter off the coast of Hualien district caused dozens of buildings to collapse.
