Yonhap Citing information from the Office of the President of South Korea on the morning of April 11, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and three senior advisers to the President, including chief of staff Lee Kwan-seop, simultaneously submitted their resignations.
Mr. Han Duck-soo said the government will accept the results of the parliamentary election and will actively cooperate further with the parliament controlled by the opposition party.
In another development, leader of the ruling People’s Power Party Han Dong-hoon also announced that he would resign and accept responsibility for this party’s defeat in the recent parliamentary election.
According to the results of counting most of the votes in the Korean parliamentary election, the opposition Democratic Party and allied parties won more than 170 seats out of a total of 300 seats in the National Assembly. Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk-yeol’s ruling party and coalition parties won 108 seats.
This result means that liberal opposition forces will expand their power. Controlling the National Assembly even gives them the legislative power to overturn vetoes.
The election on April 10 is considered by many to be a mid-term vote of confidence in the President. Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office in 2022 for a 5-year term.
