The mystery of the 200-year-old lychee tree established the oldest record in Vietnam

The ancestral lychee tree in Thanh Son commune, Thanh Ha district (Hai Duong) is more than 200 years old. In 2016, the tree was set a record as “The oldest lychee tree in Vietnam”. For the people of Thanh Ha (Hai Duong), the lychee tree is like a treasure that proves its source The ancient origin of the famous delicious Thanh Ha lychee variety.

The person who planted the tree Litchi’s ancestor is Mr. Hoang Van Com (born 1848). According to records, Mr. Com used to work as a fruit trader from Hai Duong to Hai Phong. In 1870, while attending a wedding party of overseas Chinese in Hai Phong, he tasted delicious lychees so he decided to bring three seeds to try to plant.

Due to the suitable climate and soil, all three seeds germinated into growing trees green. However, among these, only one tree produces fruit with a particularly delicious flavor. Seeing this, Mr. Hoang Van Com took branches from this precious lychee tree and propagated them to people in the commune.

Even though it is 200 years old now, the tree shows no signs of being barren. Currently, the tree is maintained and cared for by the people of Thanh Son commune and is a destination for tourists from everywhere.

The fruit of the lychee tree has a redder skin than other trees, but is smaller but has a thick pulp that is peeled and drained. When eaten, it has a sweet and crispy taste on the tip of the tongue.

According to Mr. Nuom, last year during the season, the lychee tree harvested about 2 quintals of fruit. This year, people agreed not to flower to preserve and take care of the tree for the long term.

General In early May – June every year, lychee trees begin to bear ripe fruit. This is also the time when the lychee tree attracts the most tourists. This year, people intervened to prevent the trees from flowering, so the number of visitors coming here is therefore less.
