Born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt came from a wealthy family and grew up in luxury. He was taught very carefully by his mother and enjoyed educational privileges reserved for children of noble families.
In 1896, at the age of 14, Roosevelt was sent to study at Groton School, a private boarding school. Reputable equipment in Groton Massachusetts. In 1900, he passed the entrance exam to the prestigious Harvard University.
Admiring his cousin, President Theodore Roosevelt Franklin also wanted to rise in politics. However, he did not join the Republican party like Theodore but decided to become a Democrat. At that time, when some Democrats suggested that he run for the New York State Senate, he immediately accepted and officially entered politics.
In the summer of 1921 Franklin developed a high fever while vacationing with his family at their home on Campobello Island, Canada. He felt his legs weaken and by August 12, 1921, he could no longer stand or walk without support.
With optimism and strong will, Franklin tried his best to practice. Exercise to be healthy enough to campaign. Franklin won two terms as governor of New York in 1930 and 1930. Then in the 1932 presidential election Franklin won a resounding victory based on the New Deal slogan. p>
President of the Depression
Franklin was elected president and took office in the context of America almost sinking to the bottom of the Great Depression . The unemployment rate reached 25% while agricultural prices dropped by 60%. About 11,000 out of 24,000 banks went bankrupt, “blowing away” depositors’ savings. Industrial production is just over half of what it was in the same period in 1929. Two million people are homeless. Due to lack of jobs, criminal organizations and the rate of people living outside the law are increasing.
On the afternoon of March 4, 1933, the day when Franklin was sworn in to all banks at 32 All 48 states as well as the District of Columbia are closed. On March 5, 1933, the Federal Reserve Bank in New York could not open because in the previous days panicked customers withdrew large amounts of cash.
