Sea pineapple is a consumed specialty mainly in Korea, Japan and South Korea. They often live in shallow water clinging to rocks and artificial structures.

Sea pineapples have a characteristic orange-red color with a hard, spiky shell. and 2 large tentacles at the top.

The unattractive and somewhat strange appearance of this type of seafood makes diners wary of tasting it.

To enjoy it, people must pre-process and filter the shell to get soft meat. The meat is chopped into bite-sized pieces.

In Korea, sea pineapple is called meonggae and is enjoyed with mixed rice. In Japan, sea pineapple is called hoya and is used to prepare sashimi or grill.

In addition to being caught from the wild, sea pineapples are also grown on long ropes dropped into the sea. After about 3-4 years, farmers can harvest this creature.
