Through the primeval forest, conquer Nhiu Co San, the 9th highest peak in Vietnam

At the end of October, Ms. Ha My (30 years old, in Hanoi) and her husband decided to make the journey to conquer Nhiu Co San peak. This is one of the most beautiful trekking routes in Vietnam that many climbers love and explore.

Nhiu Co San (2,965m) is located in Sang Ma Sao commune, Bat Xat district, province Lao Cai, about 60km from Sa Pa and is the 9th highest mountain peak in Vietnam, belongs to the Hoang Lien Son range.

The reason for this name is because this mountain is shaped like two buffalo horns (in the H’Mong ethnic language, Nhiu Co San means buffalo horn).

If you want to trek at the top of this mountain, tourists often move to Sa Pa, continue to Den Sang commune and then go to Nhiu Co San village.

The last road from Den Sang to Nhiu Co San is less than 10km but has many rocks and steep slopes so visitors can hire local people to drive them to ensure safety or drive their own motorbike if they want. Hard and experienced driver.

My and her husband traveled from Hanoi by bus at 9am and arrived in Sa Pa at 3pm. The next morning, the couple was picked up by a porter (a local porter) and moved to Nhiu Co San village.

From here, Ms. My and her husband began their first mountain climbing journey to conquer the mountain. The 9th highest mountain in Vietnam.

According to experienced climbers, the route to conquer Nhiu Co San often goes through Ong Chua waterfall to the goat pasture or vice versa.

The path to Ong Chua waterfall will have many large trees providing shade and waterfall streams so visitors can easily find a place to rest.

The road leading to the goat pasture is not too steep, but most of it is low grass and bushes with no streams or waterfalls, so if you come here on a hot day, you will easily lose strength.

Each season Nhiu Co San has its own beauty thanks to its rich vegetation. Coming here, visitors can feel the clear change in terrain when moving from the foot of the mountain to the top.

At the bottom there are mainly shrubs, grasslands and cliffs, but higher up is the lush green cardamom forest, large woody primary forest and finally mixed coniferous forests.

In November 12, visitors to Nhiu Co San peak can see maple trees with bright red and yellow leaves.

In January, it gets colder so this place often has frost and sometimes there is white snow on the top. At the end of the climbing season, around March and April, the whole peak of this mountain is filled with the red, purple and yellow colors of azalea flowers.

The route to conquer Nhiu Co San peak is not too long but requires the climber. Mountains must have endurance and perseverance. The most popular itinerary usually lasts two days and one night.

Ms. My and her husband started their journey to conquer Nhiu Co San peak at 11:00 a.m. and at 4:00 p.m., they went to the tent to rest.

4:30 the next morning the two got up early to continue their journey. Although they did not have time to catch the sunrise at the top, the young couple could admire this beautiful scene from a lower position.

If you start at the foot of the mountain at noon, tourists will walk and rest and will arrive at the camp at dusk around 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The shack has a modest area, only enough room for 60 – 70 people with water source coming from a stream about 300m away.

Tourists will rest overnight at the shack and continue the journey to Nhiu Co San peak early the next morning. This distance takes about 2 hours to climb.

After checking in at the top of Nhiu Co San, visitors will move back to the shack, take a lunch break down the mountain and then take the bus back to Sa Pa to finish. two days of climbing.

My sister admitted to camping travels to many places but this is 9X’s first time climbing mountains. However, the female tourist commented that the Nhiu Co San trekking route was very beautiful through primeval forests, streams, waterfalls, flowers and picturesque red leaves.
