From 1991-1993 during the field investigation and gathering of documents for the book “Famine of 1945 in Vietnam- historical evidence” Mr. Nguyen Quang An – Former Head of Documentation Department of the Vietnam Institute of History met and talked and worked for many days with the late photographer Vo An Ninh at the late photographer’s Military Hotel Vo An Ninh pointed to each photo and recounted each story he witnessed and captured on the photos for Mr. Nguyen Quang An to record and transcribe.

That’s the market place where the whole family died. We also went to the landmark of Thai Binh province – where the famine was most catastrophic. We have gone to many places to record many stories… Extremely sad!

Mr. Nguyen Quang An also said that during his work, the late photographer Vo An Ninh gave him many gifts. photos of the famine – including photos he has never used or published. Mr. Nguyen Quang An gave Dan Tri reporters the right to publish these photos so that future generations can have a clearer view of the tragedy of the famine that took place from late 1944 to May. / 1945 in Vietnam.
