Vietnamese mother’s 450m2 garden in Malaysia is full of fruit all year round

Capital generated in family has a tradition of gardening in Da Lat, so since childhood, Ms. Ly has loved taking care of plants. In 2010, after getting married and following her husband Returning to Malaysia as a bride, Ly renovated her husband’s family’s garden and brought seeds from Vietnam to plant.

Every time she returns to the country, she buys seedlings to bring over Her husband went to Vietnam for work, and she asked relatives and friends to buy seedlings for him to bring home.

Ms. Ly said that about 10 years ago, Vietnamese food and spices in Malaysia were very rare. If you want to eat those vegetables, you must grow them yourself. About the past 5 years, supermarkets have started selling many seasonal vegetables such as cowpeas, eggplant, zucchini, pumpkin, bitter melon, sweet potato, amaranth…

Johor Bahru is a large city. Malaysia’s second. The climate here is hot all year round like Ho Chi Minh City, so plants brought from Vietnam grow relatively smoothly.

The vegetable, flower and grass growing area in the yard is about 300 square meters. The corridor outside the gate is about 150m2 wide, planted with fruit trees such as custard apple, mango, orange, longan, papaya…” Ms. Ly said.

According to her Vietnamese mother, her garden grows enough clean vegetables for the family. If we consider the cost, home-grown vegetables are more expensive than those bought at the market.

However, every day she still spends more than 3 hours (from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) occasionally taking care of the garden go travel good about Vietnam Male 1-2 days she asked her father-in-law to help water the plants twice, morning and evening.

Not only does she grow enough vegetables for her family to eat, she also often gives them to Vietnamese friends and acquaintances in Malaysia. Many Vietnamese people living far from home do not always have fresh fruits and vegetables typical of home to use. When they received gifts from Ms. Ly, they were very happy.

Sharing the secret to keeping the garden always green, Ms. Ly said the most important step is choosing soil and fertilizer. Ms. Ly bought clean soil and organic fertilizer to take care of the plants.

Sometimes the Malaysian bride composts bananas and other fruits (bruised ones are sold at cheap prices) at the market to water the plants. She also asked for eggshells and coffee grounds to mix into the soil to fertilize the plants.

Ms. Ly’s husband doesn’t know how to take care of plants, but he helps her a lot when buying land, buying fertilizer, or preparing materials for gardening. .

At first, not familiar with the types of fruit trees, Ms. Ly brought her husband and father-in-law from Vietnam to encounter many funny and sad situations.

She said: “Once I asked Husband picked green toads to make chicken feet mixed with lemongrass and chili. Instead of just picking a few fruits, he ended up cutting a whole big branch. One time I got sick and had to stay in bed for several days. When I went to visit the 3-year-old avocado tree, I saw that the tree was cut horizontally by my father-in-law. The beautiful papaya tree was also cut horizontally.

When I asked him, my friend told me that any tree that was too tall should be cut down. horizontally it will sprout new shoots and quickly bear fruit. I burst into tears because I regretted the effort of fertilizing. After that time, everyone in the family who wanted to cut vegetables or cut fruit asked me first to avoid similar incidents.”

Now, after a long time, members of Ms. Ly’s family have a clear understanding of Vietnamese fruit trees. Everyone loves Vietnamese dishes made from vegetables and fruits in the garden.
