Warning about the risk of death due to dog and rat baits that look like candy

One candy “one life”

In early December 2016, the whole Truc Son commune, Cu Jut district was shaken by the death of Mr. Pham Duy Thanh (53 years old). After eating the candy suspected to be dog bait, Mr. Thanh found two lollipop-like objects in his yard the morning of the incident. He gave one to his nephew and he ate one.

According to him Pham Duy Do (Mr. Thanh’s younger brother) was not home that morning, but when he received the news that his brother was unconscious, he ran home immediately. “I ran back and saw Thanh having a seizure and foaming at the mouth, so I went with him. took him to the emergency room, but about 15 minutes later he died at the hospital. We then discovered that one of the two lollipop-like objects had been eaten by him. Suspecting that this was dog bait, the commune police and Cu Jut district police confiscated it for investigation,” Mr. Do recounted his brother’s death.

Previously, Ms. Pham Thi Thoa’s family (Tam commune) Thang (Cu Jut district) also suffered pain when his son Pham Dinh Bao Khanh (3 years old) died from eating dog lollipop.

Every time I recall the child’s sudden and unjust death son, the young mother’s face could not hide her indignation. She said harshly: “It was those evil people who brought disaster to so many families in the commune. In the area, dogs and cats often die unexpectedly, but it was only when my little boy died that everyone realized it was caused by “dog thieves”.

Remembering that fateful day Thoa was in tears when separating mother and child: “That day the child asked for a lollipop, so I asked for one for the child and carried it over to the neighbor’s house to play. While I was sitting and talking to a few people, he went to the front yard to play with a few other children. Just a few minutes later, I heard the boy screaming loudly and rolling out into the yard.”

“I stood him up and saw black tongue slime in his mouth. A few seconds later, he had continuous convulsions and occasionally trembled. Looking down at the place where my child was lying, I saw a strange object shaped like a lollipop. Everyone gathered around to check and realized that it was the thieves’ dog bait.” Ms. Thoa’s voice trembled as she remembered her child’s departure.

According to those who witnessed the incident, eating just a small piece of candy is enough to kill. Because most of them contain extremely toxic substances, even “a hospital just over 100 meters away cannot save them.”

Be careful with candy-shaped dog and rat baits

For many years now, people in Dak Nong province have had the habit of using baits to kill rats, thieves and cats. Most of these baits are sold at places that sell pesticides.

At the Kh.L pesticide store (Truc Son commune, Cu Jut district), the owner of this store let me know. I know that you sell some types of rat poison that work extremely quickly and can kill large numbers of rats. Having said that, she introduced: “Currently there are three types of rat poison: powder and granules. Tablet form is 25,000/package/20 tablets and powder form is 5,000/package/1kg of food; For nuggets, just spread them near the mouse hole.”

Meanwhile, according to the experience of “people who have hunted dogs” to make a dog bait is not difficult. “At that time, people in the profession often broke fluorescent lamp tubes to get a white powder mixed with a little cyanide of animal meat, then all the dogs and cats died. If there is no cyanide, use herbal medicine and rat poison, but these must be mixed with crushed dried fish to mask the smell,” he said.

It is known that currently, dog baits are used to kill rats. Cats are often made to resemble lollipops or tablets to easily attract animals. As for dog baits, in addition to candy baits, people in the industry have also come up with many other forms such as: soaking chicken eggs in poison and adding poison to food…

Mr. Nguyen Cong Dung, Head of Commune Police Truc Son informed: “Recently, local police and people often picked up hundreds of dog baits of different shapes. We determined that this was a new type of bait that was extremely toxic, so we destroyed it in case something bad happened. However, people also need to be very careful with objects such as meat candy… scattered in front of alleys or on the street.”

Doctor Tong Truong Ky, Director of Dak Song District General Hospital, said In dog and rat baits there is often thallium cyanide which is extremely toxic. If you accidentally eat it, you will be poisoned. Poisoned people often have convulsions, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure and decreased ventilation. If not treated promptly, the patient will lose muscle tone and lose reflexes. Cardiovascular collapse will lower blood oxygen and lead to death.
