The Non Contact Voltage feature is useful for detecting live wall sockets without inserting a metal probe (the device will beep). For non-electricians, it feels much safer this way. The TM-510 performs admirably across its core functions. The 4000 counts display provides clear and accurate readings, making it easy to measure various electrical parameters with precision.

For voltage testing, users report consistent and reliable results. I tested an 1.5V AA battery with it and it displayed 1.47 so it seemed accurate. Another user confirmed its accuracy by noting that DC voltage test was accurate when compared with another meter.

The continuity testing function works well and includes an audible indicator. The auto function works great even picking up the closing of ignition points on a vintage Yamaha. Perfect for setting the timing with the beep. This makes it particularly useful for checking wiring connections and troubleshooting circuits.

For resistance measurements, accuracy on voltages compares well to other meters, though some users note that it’s not designed for precision measurements at extremely low resistance values.

  4. Auto Power-Off: The auto off feature was a necessity for preserving battery life, especially important for a tool that might not be used daily.

Performance in Real-World Use

The true test of any tool is how it performs in actual use scenarios. The TM-510 proves its worth across a variety of common household applications.

Home Electrical Testing

It’s great for checking to see if an outlet has power or not, making sure that you turned off the right breaker, and checking for continuity of wires. These basic functions cover most homeowner needs when it comes to electrical troubleshooting.

I had 2 old multimeters in which the batteries had corroded. I needed a new meter for some electrical work I was doing at home. This device is fantastic. Auto-Only Mode

The most significant drawback for some users is the lack of manual mode selection. The biggest issue is that you are forever locked into “AUTO MODE”. Unfortunately, there’s no way to manually select a specific mode, and in some situations, the unit doesn’t know what you want to accomplish.

For example, if you want to use this meter to check your engine’s cooling system for conducting electricity through the coolant, there is no way to accomplish that. If you ground the test probe and insert the other lead into the engine coolant, the meter thinks you want to know the resistance of the solution. But what you want to know is whether or not the solution is conducting any low voltage levels of electricity. This limitation primarily affects users with more specialized testing needs.

Limited Measurement Range

Some users note limitations in the measurement range: The item description was misleading and indicated it measured resistance. The description did not indicate the range of resistance it could measure, and most multimeters start at zero ohms. This meter will read anything below 1k ohm as zero ohms. For hobbyists working with precise electronics, this could be problematic.

Physical Limitations

A few physical design elements could be improved:

  • The battery compartment has one of those tiny screws to hold the cover. Not so convenient to unscrew as you need a screwdriver small enough, and I can see the screw dropping and getting lost.
  • I would have preferred the LED light on top of the device so it would be easier to aim the light and read in the dark.
  • The manual is too large to fit in the carrying case. This is a minor inconvenience but worth noting.

Value Proposition

The value proposition of the TM-510 is perhaps its most compelling attribute. For the younger generation, meters with these options typically were in the hundreds of dollars until these past 5 years or so.

Amazing how fast technology advances as a multimeter like this would have been over $150.00 years ago. Today, the TM-510 typically retails for under $20, making it an exceptional value.

This is a very nice meter for the money, and way, way above the little 5 dollar ones still being sold or given away; all of which are built with 30+ year old technology. The technological advancements built into this affordable package make it an excellent entry point for beginners or a handy backup for professionals.

I have meters ranging from $30-$400 and this has been the first one I reach for lately. When even experienced users with access to professional equipment choose the TM-510 for its convenience, that’s a significant endorsement.

Who Should Buy the TM-510?

Perfect for:

  1. DIY Homeowners: This would be an awesome gift for anyone wanting their first little meter. For kids, slam dunk. The simplicity of operation makes it ideal for those new to electrical testing.
  2. Occasional Users: I would highly recommend this for hobbyists, garage tinkerers, or anyone that wants a meter to throw in their trunk or tool bag. Its compact size and protective case make it perfect for occasional use.
  3. Backup Tool: I’ve been in the Electrical-electronics industry for over 40 years and this is the first time I’ve had three of these meters at the same time (1 in work van, 1 in our home and 1 in our other beach home) just because they are so useful and inexpensive. Even professionals appreciate having multiple affordable units available.

Probably Not For:

  1. Professional Electricians: If you are into 480 3 phase, a licensed electrician, or you’re a lineman for the county, then keep looking. The lack of current measurement and manual mode selection limits its usefulness for professional applications.
  2. Electronics Engineers: Those working with precise component measurements or requiring greater accuracy might find the limitations frustrating.
  3. Heavy Industrial Users: The build quality, while good for the price, isn’t designed for harsh industrial environments.

Conclusion

The TM-510 Digital Multimeter represents an outstanding value in the budget multimeter market. Its smart measurement and auto-ranging capabilities remove the learning curve typically associated with multimeters, making electrical testing accessible to everyone. The non-contact voltage detection feature adds a valuable safety element, while the backlit display and additional features enhance usability.

While it has limitations that make it unsuitable for professional or specialized applications, it excels at its intended purpose: providing reliable, easy-to-use electrical testing for homeowners and hobbyists. This multimeter is really surprising for the money. The functionality is great, auto mode works well for my purposes, readings are fairly accurate.

For anyone seeking an affordable, user-friendly multimeter for basic household and automotive electrical testing, the TM-510 deserves serious consideration. For the price, not sure you could beat it. It’s a testament to how modern technology has democratized access to quality tools, putting capabilities that once required expensive equipment into the hands of everyday users.

The verdict? I highly recommend this multimeter to anyone in need of a reliable and versatile tool for electrical measurements. Its smart features, auto-ranging function, and durable construction make it a valuable addition to any toolbox.
